OCD

Understanding obsessive-compulsive symptoms and how to manage them.

Understanding ocd

OCD involves unwanted, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviours or mental acts (compulsions) that a person feels driven to perform. The compulsions are often aimed at reducing the anxiety caused by the obsessions, but this relief is temporary.

Coping Strategies

  • 1

Try to resist compulsions gradually - start with the easiest ones first

  • 2

Remember that intrusive thoughts are just thoughts, not facts or predictions

  • 3

Use delay tactics - when you feel the urge to do a compulsion, wait for a few minutes

When to Seek Professional Help

  • OCD symptoms are taking up significant time each day

  • You're avoiding more and more situations

  • The rituals are affecting school, friendships, or family life

  • You feel distressed and unable to control the symptoms
